Operation Firefly West Long Beach
Long Beach PCH and Harbor Blvd.. When the LACBC team arrived at the corner of PCH and Harbor for operation firefly, their first thought was...how many lights are we going to give our here?
It doesn't seem like it would be a place where you would see a lot of bicyclists. It's industrial, it's adjacent to the 710 Freeway, there seem to be more big trucks (and I don't mean pickups) than cars. But this is the spot in Long Beach that gets some of the highest bike counts in our yearly bike count.
To the south the area is largely industrial, but the neighborhood to the north is largely residential. With lots of families...lots of kids. And many of them ride their bikes. They ride them for both fun and for transportation.
Thanks to the LA County Bike Coalition, a grant from the Laemmle Foundation and the city of Long Beach nearly 50 sets of lights were given away. Check out the photos. And sign up at the LACBC website (lacbc.com) to help distribute lights in Long Beach over the next 8 weeks.
